Last Best Place.
Its true.
Montana is known for awe inspiring views and is The Last Best Place.
Montana is also known for its abundant precious metals and gems. Thus, Treasure State is a fitting motto.
Montana is also known for its unobstructed views of wide open spaces and The Big Sky soon became a fitting moniker.
How many more nicknames or catchy phrases are needed to describe Montana?
How about Montana, The Confused, Legal Battling, Growing Pains State?
Its fitting. Montana is confused as is evident in the last elections. The State voted for a controversial Republican President yet voted for a Democratic governor with a republican running-mate.
Montana also has its own legal battles in the environment; Blackfoot to Libby to Yellowstone , and in its own nickname.
It is my opinion that Montana is confused and battling on legal fronts because of the other descriptive name that I've given it; Growing Pains.
Montana is growing so fast that the Census Bureau can't even keep up. A new diverse Montana is emerging and the rapid change is confusing, so much so that Montana is trying to re-image itself.
I've used The Last Best Place to describe Montana before, because it is. I don't think that any one entity should have the phrase trademarked in order for capital gain. However, I don't think that Montana needs another nickname or motto either. Stay true to our roots. The Treasure state is the original motto and should be put back on the license plates. Treasure doesn't have to describe the precious metal and gems. It can describe the spirit of Montana and everything that Montanans Treasure about the state, everything from the wilderness to the way of life.
The Last Best Place can be Treasured by all for many generations to come.
